It’s that time of year again – summer in Oklahoma City! The sun is out, the birds are chirping and there’s green foliage everywhere you look. It’s one of the best times of year in the city we call home which means the majority of our residents will be out and about enjoying the sunshine. With the kids out of school and everything slowing down just a little bit, now is the time to fill your calendar with fun activities for the whole family. So, what is there to do?
The Oklahoma City Zoo
The Oklahoma City Zoo is an outing that parents and kids alike can enjoy. Take a step onto the wild side with a visit to see the giraffes, tigers, bears, turtles, snakes, fish, gorillas and more. For parents looking for a little break from the kids, the zoo even offers all day summer camps packed with fun activities to keep the kiddos entertained.
Have you always wanted to explore the zoo at night for a little something different? Purchase a ticket for the Safari Soiree on Saturday, June 17 and enjoy the animals over delicious food and drinks, and great entertainment. The zoo will even throw in a free flashlight so things don’t get too spooky.
Myriad Botanical Gardens
Myriad Botanical Gardens is another event that the whole crew can enjoy. It’s a 15-acre attraction in the heart of downtown. You won’t feel like you’re downtown with the flowers, green space, ponds and animals in their natural habitat.
Make a visit to the gardens an all-day affair with the beautiful gardens full of different species of flowers, a children’s garden and playground, a lake, a dog park, and splash fountains for the children. On Wednesdays the gardens offer reading Wednesdays for a little literary treat.
Oklahoma City Dodgers Games
It wouldn’t be summer without baseball, right? Take the family to an Oklahoma City Dodgers game at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Munch on hot dogs and sip on Coca-Colas while cheering on the home team. It’s a great way to entertain the whole family while enjoying the summer weather in the open-air ballpark. Show some Dodger pride!
Birdwatching at Lake Hefner
Bird enthusiasts unite at Oklahoma City’s very own Lake Hefner. People from all over the state “flock” to Lake Hefner for its excellent birdwatching. If birds aren’t your thing it’s also a great place for sailing or for watching the sailboat races all summer long.
There are plenty of facilities at Lake Hefner for families that want to play sports, golf, fish or just take a nice long hike. Check out the lake’s charming lighthouse while you’re there.
It’s the perfect months to get outdoors in Oklahoma City and to enjoy that extra time with your family when the kids are out of school. Oklahoma City has no shortage of fun activities and open space outdoors to keep everyone entertained for the summer months. So, close those laptops and go outside!
