The summer weather brings on the itch to find the best outdoor activities in Oklahoma. OKC residents are trying to fill the calendar with a selection of as many outdoor activities as they can find room for. So, what do you prioritize? Here is an overview of favorite outdoor OKC activities to soothe the cabin fever.
Lake Hefner
One of Oklahoma City’s hottest spots for all things outdoors is the beautiful Lake Hefner on the northwest side of the city. You won’t just enjoy great views, because a day by the lake can include anything from running, roller-blading, cycling, skateboarding, hiking, sailing, kitesurfing, to waterskiing.
If you’re not the active type but want to enjoy the great outdoors from a comfortable chair with a drink in your hand – have a nice meal at one of the restaurants at Britton Road or just sit and enjoy an epic sunset.
This is one of the best outdoor activities to allow each individual to enjoy something of their choice.
Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge
If you’re looking for something a bit more untouched and natural, look no further than the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge – 1,000 acres of the nature preserve at the north end of Lake Overholser. A hike through the refuge is a true escape from city life and an immersion in nature. It’s likely you’ll spot a few deer, beavers, or native birds.
If relaxing at a nature preserve is a bit too passive for you, there are plenty of options for the adventurers. Enjoy a heart-pumping hike, or rent a kayak or canoe to get the blood flowing.
Lake Overholser Boathouse
If kayaking and canoeing aren’t enough of a thrill for you, you might prefer to head over to Lake Overholser Boathouse for their climbing wall and zip line. Grab a stand-up paddleboard and head out to the lake, perform a free fall “stunt jump”, or get your thrills on the extreme swing. Trust us, this spot isn’t just for bird watching.
You’ll have to get in your thrills this summer though, as this spot is only open June through October.
Any of the Many OKC Golf Courses
If golf is your game, Oklahoma City has plenty to offer as well. Lake Hefner Golf Course is one of Oklahoma City’s favorites with its challenging bunkers and water hazards. It will give even the most experienced golfer a run for their money.
Lincoln Park Golf Course also offers those looking to hit the links two separate golf courses – East and West. Lincoln also boasts a brand-new clubhouse and some great food. Some of the other great courses in the area include Earlywine Park Golf Course and Silverhorn Golf Club. OKC golfers definitely won’t grow tired of playing the same courses all the time with all these options!
Take a Ride on the Spokies!
Maybe nature isn’t your thing – what about a tour around the city of OKC? Oklahoma City has introduced a city bike-share program, Spokies. Swipe your credit card at any kiosk in the city, hop on your bike and give yourself a city tour! Stop at some of OKC’s best bars or restaurants, and enjoy an afternoon in our favorite city.
