Winter house hunting is not what most bargain hunters do after Thanksgiving.
Perhaps it should be.
Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Presidents Day sales have consumers lining up while it is still midnight to be the doorbuster and score basement prices on gifts, gadgets, electronics, and appliances. Why not be looking for a home with the same vigor?
There are a lot of reasons that people are just not looking to relocate mid-winter. This puts the principle of supply and demand in favor of the brave or desperate souls who do. In other words, winter is an ideal time to catch a break whether you want to rent or are looking to buy a home.
It is not uncommon for sellers to wait until spring to put their house on the market. So those who chose to sell in winter probably have a good motivator for doing so. This puts a buyer in a good position to come out ahead in negotiating a deal.
Another bonus to winter house hunting is that you can get a good look at its condition. It’s easier to spot a water leak in the roof with snow or rain on it. A musty moldy odor may help you identify problems before you sign a contract.
Winter house hunting may not be your traditional type of holiday shopping. However, you won’t get trampled in a crowd. Your purchase will bring you much more joy than the 30 seconds it takes for the shiny (and expensive) wrapping paper to hit the floor.
